Montalto di Castro Old Town

Small squares, alleys dominated by arches, surrounding walls, the same urban layout of the historic center highlight the medieval origin with particular charm.

The town is dominated by the Guglielmi Castle, whose oldest nucleus is the imposing quadrangular tower. Probably built in the fifteenth century by the Orsini, as recalled by the plaque placed on the tower, the castle subsequently underwent numerous renovations.
At the end of the eighteenth century it was raised by one floor and in the last century the loggia and the current battlements were added.

Going along via Vulci you come to a door created in the northern part of the walls;

from here you enter the Felice Guglielmi square, on which the neoclassical facade of Santa Croce looks out. The interior has a single nave and above the altar, housed in a glass case, there is a valuable painting depicting “The Madonna della Vittoria”.

Going along via Soldatelli you arrive in front of the beautiful eighteenth-century façade of the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta. The building shows above the travertine portal the coat of arms of Pope Pius VI Braschi who promoted its complete renovation in 1783. The interior, with a single nave, is decorated with interesting paintings from the late 18th century. In a reliquary, on the right, the relics of Quirino and Candido, patron saints of Montalto are kept.

The Town Hall is located in piazza Giacomo Matteotti. The structure, originally built as a Franciscan convent, was subsequently transformed into a fortress by the Farnese and incorporated into the walls.

Outside the historic center, near the Via Aurelia, there are the eighteenth-century fountains of the Tre Cannelle and the Mascherone, both with long epigraphs surmounted by the coat of arms of the Municipality.

Along the road to Marina di Montalto you can see, on the left, the church of San Sisto, built by the Augustinian friars perhaps in the 13th century, and later transformed first into a lazaret and then into a hospital.
